OCCUPATIONAL ENGLISH TEST

OET stands for the Occupational English Test which is used for the healthcare sector ( Doctors & Nurses). 

It assesses the communication skills of those who want to register and train in an English environment. OET scores are evaluated on a grade scale of “A to E” and most of the universities ask for grade B, OET scores are valid for 2 years. If you don’t get the imperative grade in any section, you could reappear only for those sections within six months. 

It is easier than other exams like IELTS, TOEFL and, etc because it contains questions related to health professionals only. It would be helpful for students who opt for their careers in the healthcare industry. Such as Nurses, Dentists, etc.

There are some steps you can follow for OET preparation.

  1. Know the structure and format of the test.
  2. You must work on your handwriting if it is too bad. No matter how good you write, if the examiner can’t read, you will be losing your score.
  3. The listening test lasts for 40 min. You must be able to multitask in your English skills. While listening, you are listening and writing together. Furthermore, as it is a medical English exam, the spelling of medical terminology is going to be examined. foremost, make sure to write complete words and complete answers. 
  4. Time management is not only essential in life and work; it is equally important in exams too. You need to set aside your time for particular sections so that you finish all the sections accordingly.
  5. Note down important points first that you want to mention in your final content. Then, just transfer those points into sentences and paragraphs. Make sure you include everything at last.
  6. To get success in the reading part, you would need to practice how you can scan texts and how you can find related information immediately.
  7. Remember, there is no extra time given! Here in OET, the rules are accurate. So, make sure that you practice good but fast writing.

It has 4 Sections:

1. Listening

2. Reading

3. Writing

4. Speaking

Listening

 It consists of 2 parts that are Part A and B which test your comprehension skills.

Part A, candidates should listen to a dialogue between a professional and a patient, they are required to take notes under headings.

Part B, candidates should listen to a health professional giving a short talk on a health-related topic and they are required to complete a range of short and multiple-choice questions that are given on the screen.

(Time: 50 minutes)

Reading

It has 2 parts. Part A & B which has to be completed in 15 minutes. It is necessary that you must give the exact information according to the question in part A & B. This tests the comprehension skills of a particular student.

Part A Will last for 15 minutes, candidates are asked to examine 3 or 4 short health-related texts and complete a summary paragraph by filling in the missing words. It is explicitly designed for readers to test their ability and to scan texts within a time limit.

Part B will last for 45 minutes, candidates are asked to examine two passages on a general healthcare topic and answer 8 – 10 multiple choice questions for each text.

(Time: 60 minutes)

Writing

 Writing has 5 different types of questions based on the notes. Which you have to address those 5 questions in the letter.

In writing paper, candidates are asked to write a letter, usually a letter of referral. For instance: A letter of transfer or discharge, or a letter to advise a patient. Candidates are given case notes which must be included in their letter.

(Time: 45 minutes)

Speaking

 Speaking test is in the form of one-to-one talks with an examiner. It starts with an interview about the candidate’s professional background. The candidate adopts their usual professional role in this test (for instance: as a nurse) and the interviewer plays a patient or sometimes a family or carer role.

Speaking has 2 different role-plays and you will be provided with the role-play cards with a particular medical condition that you have to understand. Then you have to speak about the role-play for about 1 or 2 minutes. Remember that you have to be very clear with your comprehension. It is very important when you speak. Your medical knowledge is necessary when you speak. OET tests your English understanding as well as comprehension. Significantly, all the phases of language like Pronunciation, Grammar, Vocabulary, and delivery is also very important.
