HOW TO THINK IN ENGLISH

HOW DO I THINK IN ENGLISH

If you want to start thinking in English, you need to do the following. These are in order of importance.

  1. Increase the usage of English in your life. Studying a few times a week isn’t enough to make you think in English. To improve quickly, 2-3 hours a day is apparently what you need. That seems enormous, but you don’t need to use your time sitting in front of a textbook for hours. You can also read novels, watching TV shows, chatting with friends, or listening to a podcast while you exercise.
  2. Increase the regularity of your English exposure. Rather than waiting until the end of the day to start doing things in English, expand it throughout the day. Spend 10 minutes out of every hour reading some news in English on your phone, or watching a quick YouTube video, This would help you a lot.
  3. Put yourself in a position where English is mandatory. Find people who don’t speak your language at all, and try to communicate with them in some way. For instance, join a sports team or a TV show fan club made up of all English speakers. Start a small business selling local products to customers in other countries.
  4. Start exercising “mental chatter” in English. When you’re waiting in line somewhere, taking a shower, or cooking dinner, let your mind wander in English. Just think of phrases that you have heard which sounded intriguing, think of words to describe how you’re feeling at that time.
  5. When you converse in English, limit your thinking to the words that you already have. In a way, you have to learn to think more uncomplicated ideas. In your native language, you have an extended vocabulary which can display every feeling and emotion.

But you don’t have ways to display all those ideas in English. So limit your thinking to the simple things. Imagine that you’re a caveman, and your thoughts are things like “hot”, “big”, “fun”, etc. As you become better at English, you can add new ideas, but you have to get used to having a more linear range and a more uncomplicated personality when you’re speaking English.

The most important thing to do is- TALK TO YOURSELF! I am not saying that you have to speak aloud all your thoughts in public, but you just have to think in your mind. Tell yourself about the things you want to do today, what will you be having for your meals, where will you do work in the office, talk to yourself about anything and everything.

ADAPTING THINKING

How do I adapt myself to thinking in English?

I think the best way to do this is to join in live conversations with native English speakers, without using your native language, as much as possible. Years ago, when my friend was learning Spanish, he communicated with a group of Spanish-speaking coworkers who had come to the U.S. as a group. They spoke some English, which was a big help to me.

When he was at home, he read Spanish phrasebooks, dictionaries, and news articles and assumed me in conversation with them concerning what he read. When he met with them again for the second time, he tried out of his newly learned Vocabulary, and they corrected his mistakes.

In this manner, he improved his thinking straight in Spanish, without getting English in between his thoughts and speech. I think this method would work well with any language.

Thinking in a particular language is something which follows acquiring the ability to speak it fluently, rather than preceding it. Once when you got to a sufficient level, the only thing that will help is exposure. Reading and listening are vital—faithful native speaker witnesses the language to explain when to use one word or phrase rather than another. Ideally, a girlfriend/boyfriend/spouse who speaks the language, especially if they don’t speak your native language well enough for that to be your reasonable means of communicating with one another.

Intensify your observation skills-

Have a Look around you! Attempt to notice the different types of people you meet, the kind of attire they are wearing, the expressions they have on their faces, tell yourself about them. Observe the things around you like, your home, furniture, your workplace, hotels, roads, vehicles, etc. Describe everything to yourself in your mind.

Talk to yourself while you are cooking, tell the names of ingredients you are using, the method you are following to prepare. I am sure you might not be knowing English names for a lot of things, that is when you have to make a note of it in your memory. You can use the internet to find out the names whenever you get some free time. If you follow this procedure, you will also learn new Vocabulary which is being required in your day to day activities.

INCREASING ABILITY

HOW TO THINK IN ENGLISH

How do I train my brain to think in English

HOW CAN I INCREASE ABILITY TO THINK IN ENGLISH??

The answer is by Writing or Presentation.

By writing you make your brain deliberately to think in ENGLISH, so by writing no. of times, it will become your ability to think in English.

By Presentation, this directly means try to give speeches in English regularly only for 10 mins daily on any topic. This will also increase your ability to think in ENGLISH.

Assuming you live ‘English’ and like ‘English’, it is possible, even if you were brought up thinking and conversing another language.

If you love Cricket, can you think of the term ‘cricket’ in a different language? Probably not, even if other conditions exist for everything to do with Cricket.

So, if you want your brain to think in English ALL the time, then you must do everything in English all the time, even writing emails to your relations who do not speak English! After a year or two, you will be thinking in English and dreaming in English.

But if you are like me, some things just don’t fit English-think. That’s okay; if you can think in two or more languages, you will be more intellectually flexible. Habit is what is behind our thinking language. Two methods are better than one.

THINK WHILE WRITING

How do I think in English while writing?

When you always talk in English, read English books, watch English movies, and listen to English songs, your brain is wired to work with English. It doesn’t get slow in the translation. It becomes something natural.

For instance, look at mathematics. If I ask you to add two numbers, you don’t even think about what addition is. You just do it. Why? Because you have done it so much that your brain doesn’t think about it anymore.

Another factor is the quality of the English that you are exposed to. Lots of cheap novels exist. And watching Hollywood action movies does not make you an expert in English. But it can improve to some extent.

Watch dramas because they have more dialogue and less boom. It will be hard, but you didn’t learn maths by doing the easy sums either. Push yourself to the limit, and your roof will expand. Finally, Once you become comfier with using English in your daily activities, it will happen automatically to you.

Finally, If you want to learn to think in English, you need to reach a point where you are fluent enough in the language that it comes naturally to you. And to do that, you have to engage yourself into the language. Which means that you need to surround yourself with English

Start Reading English books, newspapers and magazines. Talk in English with people daily. Write in English. All these will help you learn English

You need to make English a significant part of your life.

If you think of it only as a subject to learn or something you do only for studies/work, you’re unlikely to become eloquent(flawless) enough to feel in it. But make it a part of your daily life, and believing in it will come as quickly to you as thinking in your primary language does. So, if you want to master it just immerse into it – click here for more
