ESL SPEAKING ACTIVITIES FOR ADULTS INTERMEDIATE

ESL stands for “English as a Second Language). I’m not completely sure if that’s the same for you, but, when you’re first registered for school in Kindergarten, they ask you on the form what your first language is, and if isn’t English, then they pull you out of class, and you take a test. So like in Kindergarten, it was: Do you remember the characters? Can you spell your name? And as time went on, it was “Can you read this book and understand it and tell me what it means?”.

Surprisingly, I ended up obtaining a perfect score on every test, and even knock out the native English speakers.

Perhaps this isn’t what you’re referring to, but maybe this acronym can teach you something new today lol.

It would be best if you had the best frame of mind or mindset to attain English mastery.

This is a harsh reality because English is our global lingua franca today.

It ‘s the Language of the 21st Century!

Establishing this mindset into tactical terms, this means that you have got to connect your practising of English from multidirectional and multi developmental angles into your daily lifestyle.

Do not compare your practising from the standpoint of ESL or EFL.

ENGLISH IS A LIFE SKILL!

You need to understand that English mastery also involves the acquisition of five critical skills sets:

– Reading

– Thinking

– Listening

– Speaking

– Writing

As applied in your daily activities of real-world communication with real people!

Like the five spokes of a wheel held all collectively, by the metal frame with the rubber tyre spinning around the hub, each of these areas needs to be strong for the motor to run smoothly on the road, where the rubber meets the way, just as you need the five skill sets for you to achieve English mastery.

Here are some useful ideas, with an all-encompassing way, based on my fast and versatile reading and writing skills

1) Read widely both mainstream and the edge: newspapers, magazines, newsletters, novels, books, and even ads and emails, etc.

2) Have a roving eye for particular words or phrases or sentences, and see how they are strung masterfully collectively to express simple ideas or novel messages eloquently and succinctly across to the reader;

3) While reading your daily newspaper, pay particular attention to three specific areas:

a) the editorials;

b) the economic analyses;

c) the political commentaries;

These sections are usually written by readers and senior journalists with an excellent command of the English Language

4) While watching movies, have a roving eye and ear for entertaining as well as intriguing dialogues or conversations

5) Always keep a great notebook handly to take all the stuff in (1) to (4); This initiative is called sentence mining;

6) Write as much as you can, and make sure you use the obtained stuff in (5) to animate your language expressions, in emails or blogs or reports or proposals, or even presentations/sales pitches, in interest to helping you to internalise the new vocabulary; moreover, writing excess also improves your grammar.

7) Use as much of the stuff you have obtained in your daily active speaking activities, too: conversations, dialogues, discussions, meetings, doing presentations or sales pitches, weblogging, webcasting, podcasting, etc.

There are lots of things you can do to help your student with English speaking before I get into specifics, a general idea.

FLUENCY AND CORRECTNESS

ESL SPEAKING ACTIVITIES FOR ADULTS INTERMEDIATE

Fluency vs Accuracy

There are two things you can focus on in, fluency or accuracy. Fluency is how quickly someone speaks, and correctness is how few errors he or she makes, as well as the range of vocabulary and grammar. It sounds like you’re focusing almost entirely on efficiency. It will help to introduce some fluency activities as well.

Just a Minute

Check out “Just a Minute.” It’s one of my favourite ESL speaking activities that focus on fluency.

Retell the Story-3,2,1

This is another one of my activities for working on speaking fluency. Students find it very challenging, but they also have a fabulous time doing it. And it works! Learners do speak more quickly. Practice something like this enough times, and they’ll be pros in no time.

Vocabulary Study

One reason that learners can struggle with speaking is that their vocabulary is too limited. You probably know whether or not this is the case with your student. If it is, here are some tips for working on that.

The most select movies for English language students have the following characteristics.

Standard English, rather than local dialects or slang.

Modern time rather than old fashioned (Period pieces such as Pride and Prejudice have some out-dated phrases).

Focus on drama rather than action.

Avoid movies with a lot of corner vocabularies, such as Harry Potter or some sci-fi movies.

Evade movies or shows with too much centre around a particular topic such as medicine or law—unless that’s your line of work.

Dodge(avoid) humour. Focus on simple, helpful dialogue

Choose a kind of interest. The key is to watch the movie several times, each time becoming more skilled. So, choose something pleasant for you.

TIPS

Sharing a few Tips

1) Select a current event or resulting from the daily newspaper or information, and get each participant to speak about it, for two to three minutes, from his or her view.

2) Tell the A story, say using ‘The 3 Little persons’ or ‘The Hare and for the Tortoise’ as examples, then get each participant to share, in 2 to 3 minutes, what he or she has learned, and why the practice takeaway is essential.

3) Use intriguing questions, as follows, to spark each participant to share his or her impressions, in say 2 to three minutes.

a) what gets you out of bed every morning? And explain why.

b) If you’ve got immense power and resources, like Bruce Almighty within the movie, what would you do? And explain why.

c) what would you are doing if you’ve got only 30 days to live?

4) Prepare an extensive presentation project, and take each participant to share, in 7 to 10 minutes, his or her hunt of dreams and needs concerning the consequent major life dimensions:

ESL stands for “English as a Seco

a) educational pursuit

b) occupation aspirations

c) mental improvement

d) dynamic health

e) economic wealth

f) family relationships

g) social networking

h) recreational adventures (including hobbies, interests, sports, vacations, etc.);

i) religious development (including contributions to society, volunteering, etc.);

5) Spread some interesting postcards or photos or pictures randomly, and acquire each participant to pick one, then proceed to elucidate intimately, what’s within the image (about 5 minutes):

– whats the theme/what’s within the foreground/

– what’s within the background/what’s within the centre or middle/

– what’s on the right/what’s on the left/

– what’s at the height/what’s at the bottom/

– what at the top-right/top-left/bottom-right/bottom-left/

– what’s appearing/is it inside or outside/who’s there/

– how’s the climate and timing; how do I know/

– would you like to be within the postcard or photo or picture; why and why not?

6) Just get each member to talk for, say 2 to 3 minutes, about his or her motherland from the standpoint of attracting international investors and tourists;

7) Get each member to introduce a standard street food from the standpoint of sharing its history, uniqueness within the country’s cooking expertise, how it’s prepared, and explain why local communities are crazy about it.
